The Victorian Parliament has passed the Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria Amendment Bill 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Multicultural communities across Victoria, language services and LanguageLoop. 

The legislation implements key recommendations of the Victorian Multicultural Review which engaged more than 600 Victorians, received 150+ submissions, and consulted extensively with multicultural communities and sector stakeholders.    

Based on the Review’s recommendations, the Bill introduced the framework for LanguageLoop to become the Victorian Government’s preferred provider of interpreting and translation services, after a process of consultation and engagement across government and the sector that will inform future implementation. 

The reforms are intended to: 

• strengthen coordination of language services across government 

• support greater consistency in service delivery 

• build long-term capability and sustainability 

• reinforce quality, safety and ethical practice 

• improve access to interpreting and translation services for government agencies 

• support better outcomes for Victorian communities 

This milestone follows LanguageLoop’s transition from a State Business Corporation to a State Body on 1 July 2026, which created the foundation for these reforms.

What will change?  

LanguageLoop is introducing employment pathways to support these reforms and provide interpreters with access to the benefits and protections of employment, creating more secure and sustainable career opportunities for language professionals, while helping attract, retain and develop skilled language professionals. 

Professional interpreters and translators remain central to LanguageLoop’s future. Their expertise underpins the safe, ethical and high-quality language services that government agencies and communities rely on every day. 

Looking ahead 

The passage of the Bill is an important milestone, but implementation will take place over time. 

LanguageLoop will continue working closely with interpreters, translators, employees, government agencies, clients and community stakeholders as the reforms are implemented.
