In honour of NAIDOC Week, the Hon. Ros Spence MP, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, has today announced that multicultural organisations across Victoria will be able to access translated versions of the Acknowledgement of Country in Victoria’s top 20 languages to celebrate Australia’s Traditional Owners of the land.
With 300 languages spoken across Australia, Professor Kathy Laster, Chair of Australia’s leading language service provider LanguageLoop, said the organisation felt honoured to be able to help all Australians embrace the rich history of this country.
“We are extremely proud to provide the Acknowledgement of Country in Victoria’s top 20 languages to celebrate NAIDOC Week this year,” Ms. Laster said.
“We are increasingly working with our clients to offer Indigenous interpreting and translation services, together with our partner ABC Multilingua. We will continue to raise awareness of Australian Indigenous languages, as well as acknowledging the links between language, cultural identity and reconciliation.”
The Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ros Spence welcomed the news during NAIDOC Week.
“This is a terrific initiative from LanguageLoop, and I encourage community organisations across Victoria to take up the opportunity to access these resources,” The Minister said.
“As a community, it is important that we celebrate the achievements, history and rich culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and these resources will be another way for communities to do this.”
While NAIDOC Week is held between the 8th and 15th of November this year, the Minister said these free translations will be available all year round for all Australians to continually recognise that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
