Leading national language services provider LanguageLoop, has announced the launch of its Australian-first mobile video interpreting app – VideoLoop. Partnering with Western Health the video app will deliver innovative interpreting services to make it easier for patients from multicultural backgrounds to get the care they need.
Western Health’s Dr Arlene Wake, Executive Director Community Integration, Allied Health and Service Planning announced that “Western Health is proud to be the first hospital in Australia to utilise VideoLoop, to meet the diverse needs of the community we serve.”
One of the fastest growing corridors in Australia, Melbourne’s West is amongst the most culturally diverse regions in Victoria.
“More than 30% of our community is born outside of Australia. Within our catchment at least 110 different languages are spoken, with around 8% of the total population having poor or no English proficiency, significantly higher than the national average of 2.6%. We also have a high number of refugee and asylum seekers within the region” said Dr Wake.
Western Health will this week commence using the mobile-video interpreting app with a focus on improving outcomes and expanding access to interpreters for women who need an interpreter during their maternity care.
Having been Western Health’s interpreting and translating service provider since 1998, LanguageLoop recognised how VideoLoop could meet the organisation’s challenges, where on-site interpreting was often not an option at short notice, or where it was limited by location, availability and costs. To address this problem, which is typical in health settings, the team at LanguageLoop looked for a proactive way to deliver a seamless service through technological innovation.
CEO of LanguageLoop, Elizabeth Compton, said “we have the opportunity to change lives and to connect organisations and non-English speakers. This new service will enable greater inclusion and accessibility across the community. We’re focused on genuine investment into innovation, and over the past year we have been working hard on new solutions like VideoLoop, to deliver on our mission by re-imagining how language services can be delivered.” she said.
“This is just the beginning, and we are excited to see the impact of bringing the future of affordable, on-demand language services into the hands of the 21% of Australians who speak a language other than English.”
